Construction of the Ro-Ro Terminal in the western outer harbour of the Porto Canale of Cagliari

SECTOR: Maritime engineering
LOCATION: Portocanale of Cagliari
CLIENT: Port System Authority of the Sardinian Sea
PERIOD: 2021 – 2023
VALUE OF WORKS: € 291.928.400
ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT: Final design, safety coordination during the design phase, environmental impact study

The project involves the construction of the Ro-Ro Terminal in the western outer harbour of Cagliari's Canal Port, a €292 million infrastructure that, once completed, will accommodate all ferry (Ro-Pax) traffic and Ro-Ro ships currently docked in the historic port. The project pursues the dual objective of contributing to the development of Ro-Ro traffic in the Port of Cagliari and, at the same time, redeveloping the Old Port for tourism, recreation, and recreational purposes, physically separating the port's various functions. This is the largest contract ever awarded by the Sardinia Port Authority and among the largest in Italy.

The maritime infrastructure includes:

  • 4 berths for latest generation Ro Ro and Ro Pax ships LOA=196m with a total development of over 1,300 metres of port quays on a depth of 11 metres;
  • 2 additional berths for RoRo vessels using a 300 m long mooring jetty on 6 metal structure piles, each composed of 5 Ф1420 steel piles fixed at -33 m lmm;
  • a 700-metre-long reef defence work;
  • dredging of the port seabed for over 1.7 million cubic meters of sediment;
  • construction of 2 landfill sites for the management of moved and non-reusable sediments;
  • construction of 43 hectares of new parking spaces (5), following consolidation with vertical drains and pre-loads, recovered from the sea through the reuse of approximately 600,000 m³ of dredging mud for over 2,500 parking spaces;
  • access road to the terminal and its connection to the existing primary road network, including a roundabout and the internal port road;
  • technological systems serving the port facility (electricity, lighting, fire prevention, cold ironing, drinking water, rainwater collection and treatment, water and sewerage);
  • environmental and landscape impact mitigation works and “green projects”.

The project, after receiving the positive opinion of the CSLLPP (no. 122/2022) and the Environmental Compatibility Decree from the Ministry of the Environment (no. 231/2023), was verified, validated, and finally approved, just 20 months after the start of the service, with AdSP Decree no. 124/2023.
