Implementation of coastal defense projects in Fregene Sud, Fiumicino

SECTOR: Difesa costiera
LOCATION: Fiumicino (RM)
CLIENT: Municipality of Fiumicino
PERIOD: 2022-2024
VALUE OF WORKS: € 3.275.488,76
ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT: Definitive and Executive Design and Works Management

The affected coastline, approximately 1 km long, is located on the Tyrrhenian coast north of the Tiber River delta (Figure 1), approximately twenty km as the crow flies from Rome and approximately 5 km from Fiumara Grande. Specifically, the area falls within the Municipality of Fiumicino, specifically in the Fregene area.

The project, partly financed by the Lazio Region, included the construction of:

  • a longitudinal barrier approximately 825 m long;
  • three groynes approximately 100 m long connecting the beach and the reef;
  • four smaller groynes (approximately 50 m, two of which have a T-head) inside the two cells identified by the other works, to allow for greater stabilization of the shoreline;
  • an external groyne approximately 50 m long to reduce the effects of the barrier on the stretch of coastline downstream;
  • a beach nourishment with dredged sand included among the works.

The works were completed between December 2022 and August 2024. During this period, the construction management office was responsible for managing emergencies resulting from extreme weather events that occurred during the construction process and drafting a modification during construction to allow the works to be adapted to new requirements.
